About 7 years ago, our local Dressage Club was hosting a saddle-fitting clinic. I attended, knowing my expensive saddle fit my horse…. It had too, right? Unfortunately, my horse was sore and I felt badly that I had made him so uncomfortable for such a long time. The next day, I tried my friend's Albion and the difference in my horse made me believe how truly important saddle fit is. I have loved horses as far back as I can remember… I always sought opportunities to ride and compete whenever I could. It took me till my late 20's when I could actually afford to be owned by a special horse.

So many factors are important when considering saddle fit. The rider has a marked affect on how a horse moves and carries himself. After 15 years riding Dressage, I realize there is a direct correlation between the rider's body and a horse's movement. The conformation of the horse is also key in assessing saddle fitting issues. As a rider and saddle fitter , I enjoy the challenges of saddle fit with my goal being to create the most harmonious experience for both horse and rider. Most adult amateurs look for the satisfaction of a connection between man and horse. If I can help this happen , I have done my job.

Why I love this job…. A client had me fit her young Lipizzan stallion for a new saddle. Once the fitting was complete, it occurred to her we might see if the saddle could work on her Morgan. He had been retired. With some minor adjustment, the saddle could be used on the Morgan. We tacked him up and off she went. After a few minutes, she came back with tears in her eyes. When I asked her what was wrong, she told me he had been retired due to lameness and this was the first time in a very long time, she could remember him going sound.

I am always amazed by the giving nature of these wonderful creatures. I have had the opportunity to work with many different breeds of horses and am always amazed how much they continue to teach me. With all of the pleasure horses have given to me, I consider it a privilege to work with them on a daily basis.
